We headed to the Acorn Acres farm near Bushnell, Florida for the two-day AKC Herding trials. Set back off the road in a beautiful rural area of central Florida, the serene fields provide a peaceful venue for the weekend of various cattle, duck and sheep trials.
About a dozen teams of various breeds from large Beauceron to Pembroke Corgi’s competed in the various challenges and in pleasant weather that is typical for the time of year in Florida. Not too hot or too cold.
Herding Trials
Herding and hunting are perhaps the oldest of partnerships between man and dog. There is something magical to watch these teams in action across the fields with sheep and cattle. The trials provide simulations of common ranch tasks. Driving the stock to a pen, splitting a herd (known as a shed) and leading through a "chute".
Unlike many popular games like dock diving or Fast CAT, the practice and training in herding requires dedication, patience and perseverance.
The best first step is to attend the trials. See how the events run and meet the owners and trainers. An additional online resource for those interested is a Facebook group; Herding in Florida, where many of the community post news, upcoming events and discuss all things herding.

"AKC’s Herding program offers both tests and trials. The herding test is offered in a non-competitive pass/fail format as an Instinct Test, Herding Test, and Pre-Trial test. All are conducted within a fenced arena and includes the use of livestock such as ducks, sheep, or cattle. During a test, a dog must demonstrate the ability to move and control livestock by fetching or driving and be sufficiently trained to work at the proper balance point to move the stock forward on the course."

Acorn Acres farm is in rural Bushnell, Florida. It is important to remember the trials are held at working farms and ranches. There is ample parking and the ground is level but not paved. There is no permanent seating, so spectators should bring their own chairs. There is a Porta Potty available, but not one easily accessible to wheelchairs.
